Great Websites

For Children:
These are the sites that our students at Brooks Hill have access to in school.  You can reach many of the sites below through this area.  It's visually easier for the students.

(The rest are listed alphabetically.)

ABCya! A variety of games to play. I've checked out the math ones and like them the best.  Kids love this site. (Some of my favorites for fluency: Math Fact Shoot Out, Math Stack, Clear It, Sum of All Dice.)

America's Story from America's Library- The Library of Congress puts the story back in history through images of primary source documents, prints, photographs, maps, recordings, and other materials from the past. Along with the fascinating information about people, places, and things of interest to kids of all ages, there are songs to listen to, a Krazy Kat cartoon to watch, a scavenger hunt, and other fun things to do.

Bedtime Math- Make math part of a family routine!  Daily math problems with differing levels of questions.  **One of my favorites!

DOGOnews: Fodder for young minds - interesting articlesbook reviews, and movie reviews by kids.

Fun For the Brain Lots of Math Games to help with fluency.
(Careful- There are links/ads to Adapted Mind on here, so be careful you don't click on that instead.  That site is wonderful, but you need to pay a monthly subscription.)

Kids' CBC- Canadian Media Fund- Produced by the Canadian Media Fund, Kids CBC is an attractive and timely mix of newsworthy events, entertainment, games, animals, nature, science, and pop culture.

Kids Safe Search Sites- If you want to search for information that is kid-appropriate, this site provides several options.
**Kiddle is the search engine we use with students at school.

Kizphonics - phonics/letter-sound word games by grade level

Math Anywhereaims to build positive math experiences outside of school. Check out the "Idea Gallery."

Mocomi - "Mocomi is a fresh approach to content for kids with the perfect blend of fun and learning that helps the left and the right-brained child learn through experiences."

The Poem Farm- Kids can read old and new poems from our favorite local poet- Amy Ludwig VanDerwater!

Spelling City Type in spelling words into the boxes and play games. (We only use the free version.)

Sports Illustrated for Kids- Great for sports fans, kids can read current articles written for them.

Starfall This site is no longer purchased by FCSD, so there are fewer options available.

Storyline Online- Different actors and artists read picture books aloud.  It reminds me of Reading Rainbow.

Talking Math with Your Kids- A blog site where a math researcher shares research and possible ways to bring math talk into your life at home.

Which One Doesn't Belong?- Thought-provoking puzzles. There are no answers provided as there are many different correct ways of choosing which one doesn't belong.

Wonderopolis- A great site to cultivate curiosity and read informational text.  Check out the featured question of the day or search to see if there is a topic of your choice that you can read about.  There is the option to have it read aloud but be warned that it's a robotic reading.

Would You Rather Math- Asking students to pick a path and justify their answers. Select K-2.

ZooBorns- Great site for animal lovers! You can search for an animal or see the most recent births from zoos and aquariums around the world.

For Parents:

Brightly - A favorite site of mine about books. There are articles and great suggestions for titles at various reading ages and topics.

Center for Parent and Teen Communication- Based out of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, that spoke at Fairport in 2019 about resilience, is on this team.

Imagination Soup: "Want the best books to hook your kids on reading? We curate good books and other educational resources for parents, teachers, and librarians."

Literacy Connections: Promoting Literacy and a Love for Reading

Math Mania Site- Fun games for families and educators

Love Maths- Excellent site for math games (Australian Math Educator, so choose games for "Foundation to Year 2")

More Words.com- find more word patterns for spelling-
Ex.- Type in "ain," then click on the link that says, "Find all words containing 'ain'"
